Metaphorical synesthesia: a compositional experiment using truck tarpaulin to recreate intoxication-like states

This project relates to drug use and its effects on the psyche, particularly in regards to the fear of missing out. My pieces aim to initiate a discussion about how we can resist the pressure to take drugs in order to fit in or have an experience. I also engage with research on psychedelic drugs, particularly psilocybin, which is being studied as a treatment for various mental illnesses. My art asks the question of whether refraining from psychedelic experiences really means missing out on something important, or if there are other ways to gain deeper insights into ourselves and our surroundings. Through my art, I hope to contribute to the awareness that we do not need drugs to have meaningful experiences or be part of a community. Instead, we should focus on our own growth and experiences to discover ourselves and enjoy the beauty of the present.

In addition, I also incorporate the danger of alcohol into my art, which is often not perceived as a drug in our society, despite being one of the most widespread and dangerous drugs. My art aims to create awareness about the risks of alcohol consumption and its influence on the psyche and interpersonal relationships. I also want to point out, not only the danger of alcohol, but also other substances such as sugar, caffeine, nicotine and such.

My art aims to visualize what the world could look like if we were in a state similar to a drug-induced high, without actually being under the influence of any substances.

These collages are made with the snippets of the tarp I used for my cutouts. Reassembling of these snippets is challenging and fun, a slow process of finding the perfect composition in those works and arrangement of those different layers.
